Spring Steel Strip

In the UK over 90% of cold rolled spring steel sales are in CS70 and CS80 grades. Both grades are part of the BS1449 standard.

Both grades are high carbon “spring” steel used in a variety of applications where high tensile strength is required.

CS70 is normally supplied in the annealed condition, in which it is suitable for bending, shaping and forming, before heat treatment. Close International equivalents are Din CK67, AISI/SAE 1070 and Euronorm C67S.

CS80 is usually supplied in the ready hardened or hardened and tempered condition, with a grey, blue or polished finish. The advantage of hardened and tempered steel is that it can be used to produce components that do not require the cost of further hardening.

For products requiring thinner steel strip or even higher tensile strengths, CS95 is often used, this is equivalent to Euronorm C100S or SAE 1095.

We stock these three basic grades of spring steel in the soft condition (annealed), which can be formed prior to heat treatment or ready hardened material (hardened and tempered), which is more suitable for flat springs, blades etc.
